Since returning back to the UK in January after a year of travelling (with some very interesting driving experiences along the way!), I’ve had my sights firmly set on becoming a paramedic. Along with posting my application to the North West Ambulance Service, I immediately pursued involvement with the IAM, knowing full well that the advanced driving experience would be extremely useful towards a successful bid. Although my position with the ambulance service is not yet finalised after four months of the recruitment process under my belt, my involvement with the IAM has already been incredibly valuable towards the selection process; to pass two paramedic driving assessments, along with my LGV theory and practical tests (all with the added pressure of having to pass first time!) would have undoubtedly been a much more difficult task without the driving experience I’ve gained from the ‘skills for life programme’. Driving is such an integral part of the paramedic’s job description, and I know that joining the IAM has provided me with a great foundation for the intensive driving training to follow with the paramedics.

Much to my delight, I successfully passed my IAM test on May 19th 2009 at the first attempt. Almost all of my thanks should go to Leigh Webber for providing me with such great tuition over the past few months. I was astonished to find out that I was one of Leigh’s first students, and his very first student to pass the IAM test. As well as being a great guy, Leigh’s knowledge, tuition and enthusiasm was exceptional. I have no doubts that Leigh will have an endless stream of successful candidates in the future and I wish him all the best.

I’d like to extend my thanks to CANAM for providing me with such a friendly, seamless experience throughout. Giving me the opportunity to write in this newsletter is a perfect example of how the group values the thoughts and experiences of their members.

I can now go into my new role confident that (at least for the driving requirements) I’m well qualified!

Thanks again,
Ian Moriarty
